Non-Traditional Hardwood Flooring

Designer’s Corner Questions

Question:

Is all hardwood flooring traditional?

Answer:

No! There are many types of hardwood and many styles. There are many exotic style hardwoods that can be used in a traditional setting or a very contemporary one.

Like traditional hardwood floors, exotic hardwood floors have styles offering different widths, species, grain, colors and types on construction. You can find exotic hardwoods that are unfinished, pre-finished, solid or engineered. Most of the floors come from places like South America, Australia, The Far East and Africa. Here is a link to see a selection of domestic versus exotic samples from the National Hardwood Association. Not all species of exotic hardwood are available as flooring.

Examples of non-traditional exotic hardwood types:

Cocobolo (see image above)

Movingui

Eucalyptus

Lacewood

Bubinga

African Padauk

Zebrawood

There are many others, these are just a few!
